He guys!

So I guess you want to keep the original title of "The Chronicles of Bucky O' Neal" . . . I have another decision that I need your help with.

In this comic . . .our hero, Bucky, an 11 year old gamer who wants to make his own game review magazine called "The Prescott Game Chronicles" where he reviews the latest 8-bit (the setting for this comic in in the 80's mind you) video games and sell it at school to the students, but another student will also make a rival magazine called "Rad Gaming".

So here's my question . . . should I allow real games, say Metroid or Castlevania, or make up my own games?  Do you think I could get in trouble for having real games in my comic?

Jon

BTW the comic will finally kick off this week!

I voted for both. I think it would be a nice mix and would give you extra material to work with :)

I say fictional games will definitely add to the fun of reading the comics, but real games are great for giving us a a good sense of what you like in games and to look at them in different perspectives. Either choice is great, but I'd prefer fictional games.

I think you can get away with doing real games. Look at Pvp and Penny Arcade. They do it. But either way it goes I'm sure it'll be a good comic.

If you use real games, you can actually give a review of the game. If you use fictional games, you can still be in the mindset of a game.

Will you also be featuring a character who does "import" games?

Fictional games are more fun to me because then I have to guess the reference.

There is that haunting shadow of copyright infringement, so I would advise against a direct copy of actual games. But I don't see why Bucky wouldn't enjoy playing the role of female bounty hunter Erin Sameece or fierce Irish vampire hunter Simon Trevor MacHelsing in the games Mydroit and Eirevania.

I would parody real games and make up some fictional ones

Some examples of parodies:

Giga Man (Mega Man)
The Saga of Celida (Zelda)

As long as you file it under parody, I think you can get away with it.

Hmm.  I'm not sure how it works... you have the right to make cultural references, so perhaps it counts as that??  I'm really not sure.  I had the same problem in my current book, that I described a game that really existed, (the gameplay that is) but I got worried and made up my own in the end, just to be safe >.<  But because this would be reviews.. I have no idea >.<

I agree with Jacob-Cross, this will allow for original humor as well as, for lack of a better term, Easter eggs.

We can do that! or maybe have the readers submit a game idea and turn it into reality in the comic!
