My wife still plays old DOS based RPG games in DOS Box on her PC. Yep! She searches hi and low for the old games and plays them through with a crazed gleam in her eyes. I just stay back.

I have the same reaction when watching certain Anime cartoons. I wake up an hour later on the floor covered in drool. :)

After being a gamer for my entire life, I can honestly say that I could care less if a game looks like an Atari 2600 game. In fact, I prefer 8 and 16-bit graphics, since the game's story and gameplay can't "hide" behind cutting-edge graphics. If I have fun playing a particular game, I WILL play the shit out of it, regardless of graphics. (I'm looking at you, Minecraft.)

Totally know what you're talking about, a few years ago I tried playing Dragon Warrior on NES I played for a few days and then just lost interest. Do to graphics and a thin story I mean come on I'm runnung all around this crappy oversaturated landscape just for some armor, all while getting stopped every two min.s AHHHH!!!

Great job of capturing this nastalgic feeling falling short!

Reminds me of my transition from PS3 games to a PS1 game. It's pretty crazy. :)

I've experienced this with many old games I used to play... it's almost depressing to find you can't get the same enjoyment out of them that you used to. Damn technological advances! :shakefist:
On the other hand... Mmm... skull crusher chips.

I don't mind the old 8-bit sprites. But try replaying something from the 90's with that 1st generation 3D graphics on it (like Dungeon Keeper), that's painful.

I bet some of the gameplay elements you probably won't like or just tolerate.

1. No automap. I won't play a game without an automap. The time for fussing with graph paper is over!

2.You have to do the math to determine if a new item in the inventory is better than the stuff you equip.

3. Filler stuff like a random maze just to make the game longer.

Looks great.

Okay, I can agree with your second point. @.@ I can only think of the first Final Fantasy though when it comes to mathing. I guess it sucks that I was introduced to the first game through a remake, not realizing the NES version is on perma-hard mode. :/

Back in the day when PC games would boot from a 5 1/4 floppy, I had this adventure game called Wizardry.
One of my friends would make the map while we played. Having a good map is important because when your spellcasters are out of spells and the fighters are beaten up, you do not want to stumble around blindly and run into another fight. You just want to run for the stairs up as fast as possible.
We beat the game but I was in a class and did not see the end. Bummer.

Umm, I know why mapping is important. o.o I was talking about your second point, about figuring out which items do more damage or give more defense stats. Did issues like that come up in Wizardry as well?

No because I did not know any better then.
Now I would be slightly annoyed.

Drakensang (MMO) does not do it and its kinda annoying.
There is one game that shows if the weapon is better by using red or green.
Red if the weapon/armor is worse or green if better.

Wizardy 9 or 8 is a more modern game but I forget if it has automap.

It can be a bit odd to see ones old games after some years have passed. :)

Especially on a 40 inch screen. That's why my NES is hooked up to my little 13 inch boobtube.

Yeah. Sadly, my NES experience is limited to the Wii virtual Console and vNES, but I do have an N64 kicking around with Goldeneye, OOT and Donkey Kong 64.
